Why do I need adventure travel insurance?
Ordinary travel insurance may exclude certain sports, outdoor activities or more adventurous experiences, particularly where additional risks or specialist equipment are involved.
Rise & Shield is designed for adventurous travel, with cover available for 190+ activities ranging from surfing, safaris and kayaking to skiing, high-altitude trekking and more specialised adventures.
How do I know if my activity is covered?
Use the activity finder above and search for the exact sport, activity or experience you plan to do. It will show whether the activity is available and any additional cover level that may be required.
It also shows important special conditions and exclusions. If you cannot find your exact activity or are unsure which option describes your plans, contact us before buying.
Do I need an add-on for adventure activities?
Not always. Many adventure activities are included without an additional activity add-on, while more specialised activities may require Adventure Plus, Adventure Extreme or Winter Sports cover.
Important: Check every activity you plan to do and make sure any required add-on appears in your policy summary before travelling.
Can one policy cover several adventure activities?
Yes. Your trip can include multiple eligible activities, provided each activity is covered and you have selected any additional cover required for everything you plan to do.
For example, one holiday might combine safari tours, kayaking, trekking and surfing. Check each activity separately so you know which conditions and cover levels apply.
Do adventure activities have special conditions or exclusions?
Some do. Depending on the activity, you may need a professional guide or operator, an appropriate licence or certification, recognised routes, specific safety equipment or to remain within certain activity limits.
Individual activities can also have specific exclusions. Always check the Conditions and Exclusions shown in the activity finder for the exact activity you intend to undertake.
What if I am injured while doing an adventure activity?
Eligible emergency medical treatment may be covered when your activity is insured and you meet its applicable conditions, subject to the medical benefit limits, exclusions and excesses in your policy.
Where emergency evacuation is medically necessary, contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Centre. Helicopter evacuation requires approval and a separate helicopter evacuation excess applies.
What should I check before I buy?
Check every activity you expect to take part in, including optional excursions or activities booked separately from your main holiday.
Confirm any required add-ons, special conditions and exclusions, and make sure the necessary cover appears in your policy summary. If your plans change later, check any new activity before taking part.

Adventure travel insurance FAQs
What is adventure travel insurance?
Adventure travel insurance is travel insurance designed for trips that include sports, outdoor pursuits and other active experiences that ordinary holiday insurance may restrict or exclude.
Rise & Shield combines regular travel benefits with cover for 190+ adventure activities, subject to the activity level, conditions and exclusions that apply to what you plan to do.
What is adventure sports travel insurance?
Adventure sports travel insurance is cover for holidays involving activities such as surfing, skiing, trekking, kayaking, scuba diving, cycling, rafting and many other sports or outdoor pursuits.
The important thing is not simply having a policy labelled “adventure insurance”, but checking that your exact activity and circumstances are covered.
Does ordinary travel insurance cover adventure sports?
Not always. Standard travel insurance policies can restrict or exclude particular sports, higher-risk activities or specialist pursuits.
Rise & Shield is designed around adventurous travel and provides cover for more than 190 activities, although some require an additional cover level or have specific conditions and exclusions.
How many adventure activities does Rise & Shield cover?
Rise & Shield currently offers cover for 190+ adventure activities, ranging from relatively everyday holiday activities to more specialised sports and high-altitude adventures.
How can I check whether my exact activity is covered?
Use the activity finder on this page and search for the exact sport, activity or experience you plan to take part in.
The finder shows the relevant activity level along with any special conditions or exclusions. If you cannot find your activity or are unsure how your plans should be classified, contact Rise & Shield before buying.
Do all adventure activities need an add-on?
No. Many activities are available within the standard activity cover, while others require additional cover such as Adventure Plus, Adventure Extreme or Winter Sports.
Always check your exact activity and make sure any required extra appears in your policy documentation before taking part.
What are Adventure Plus and Adventure Extreme?
Adventure Plus and Adventure Extreme extend the activities available beyond the standard activity level. They are used for particular specialist activities and higher-risk variations, while Winter Sports is a separate optional cover for eligible snow and winter activities.
The activity finder is the easiest way to see which level applies to your plans.
Can one travel insurance policy cover several adventure activities?
Yes. A single trip can include several eligible activities, provided each activity is covered and you have selected any additional cover required for everything you plan to do.
For example, the same holiday might include trekking, kayaking, surfing and a safari. Check each activity individually because different conditions or cover levels can apply.
Does adventure travel insurance cover surfing?
Yes. Surfing is listed under Rise & Shield’s Adventure activity cover.
Different board and water activities can have different classifications, however, so check the finder if your plans involve something more specialised such as kite surfing or another variation.
Does adventure travel insurance cover skiing and snowboarding?
Eligible skiing and snowboarding activities can be covered with Winter Sports Cover. The exact conditions depend on the type of skiing or snowboarding involved, with exclusions applying to activities such as certain competitions, freestyle pursuits and stunts.
Does adventure travel insurance cover safari tours?
Yes. Eligible safari tours are listed under Adventure cover when pre-booked through a professional tour operator.
The current activity conditions exclude activities such as handling, working with or using firearms around dangerous animals, so check the exact safari experience you have booked.
Does adventure travel insurance cover kayaking and canoeing?
Yes. Eligible kayaking and canoeing can be covered, but the required activity level depends on the type and grade.
For example, inland or coastal kayaking and canoeing at Grades 1–2 is listed under Adventure cover, while more demanding variants may require a higher activity level.
Does adventure travel insurance cover scuba diving?
Yes. Rise & Shield can cover eligible scuba diving, but the activity level and conditions depend on your qualifications and intended depth.
The current policy includes qualifying dives up to 18m under Adventure and up to 30m under Adventure Plus, with certification, supervision and other diving conditions applying.
Does adventure travel insurance cover hiking and trekking?
Yes. Rise & Shield covers eligible hiking and trekking, with activity levels extending from ordinary routes through to high-altitude trekking up to 6,500m.
Altitude, recognised-route and guide requirements vary, so use the activity finder or the dedicated trekking pages for the exact rules applying to your itinerary.
Does adventure travel insurance cover mountain biking and cycling?
Eligible cycling and mountain biking activities can be covered, but different types have different activity classifications.
General off-road mountain biking, downhill riding, organised cycle tours and independent cycle touring are treated separately, so check the exact type of riding you plan to do.
Does adventure travel insurance cover white-water rafting?
Yes. White-water rafting at Grades 1–3 is currently listed under Adventure cover, subject to its guide/operator and safety-equipment conditions.
More specialised water activities may be classified differently, so check each activity separately.
Does adventure travel insurance cover high-altitude or mountaineering trips?
Eligible high-altitude trekking and selected mountaineering activities can be covered, with Adventure Extreme extending certain activities up to 6,500m.
Mountaineering has separate named-peak, route, guide and technical conditions, so check the dedicated mountaineering or high-altitude information rather than assuming that every mountain below 6,500m is covered.
Does Rise & Shield offer extreme sports travel insurance?
Some activities commonly described as extreme sports can be covered, but “extreme sports” is too broad to determine eligibility by itself.
Rise & Shield assesses the specific activity and variation involved. Some require Adventure Plus, Adventure Extreme or Winter Sports, while others are excluded altogether. Use the activity finder for the exact sport you plan to do.
Are professional sports or competitions covered?
Activities undertaken at a professional or semi-professional level are excluded.
Competition rules vary by activity. Some races or organised events can be eligible where the activity table specifically permits them and the required conditions are met, while other competitions and racing are excluded.
What if my adventure activity is not listed?
Do not assume it is covered just because it is similar to another activity.
If you cannot find the exact activity in the finder, contact Rise & Shield with a description of what you will be doing so the team can confirm whether suitable cover is available before you buy or participate.
Does adventure travel insurance cover emergency medical treatment?
Eligible medical expenses arising from a sudden and unforeseen illness or injury during an insured trip may be covered, subject to your selected plan’s limits, policy terms and exclusions.
Your planned adventure activity must itself also meet the applicable activity conditions.
Does adventure travel insurance include helicopter rescue?
Rise & Shield policies can provide helicopter evacuation for medical reasons when the evacuation is medically necessary and pre-approved by the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Centre.
The assistance team determines the appropriate evacuation arrangements, and a separate medical helicopter evacuation excess applies.
Does adventure travel insurance cover cancellation?
Rise & Shield plans include cancellation and curtailment benefits for qualifying insured circumstances, with different limits depending on whether you choose Essentials, Classic or Elite.
Activity cover does not mean that every reason for cancelling an adventure is insured; the cancellation event must meet the policy terms.
Does adventure travel insurance cover travel delays or missed departures?
Rise & Shield plans can include benefits for qualifying outward delays, missed departures or connections and abandonment, subject to the benefit available under your selected plan and the relevant waiting periods, limits and conditions.
Is my adventure sports equipment covered?
Eligible personal baggage and equipment may be covered under the luggage section, subject to total limits, single-item limits, security requirements and excesses.
The general baggage wording excludes breakage or damage to sports equipment while it is being used, and also excludes items loaned, hired or entrusted to you. Separate optional cover, such as Winter Sports, can have different equipment provisions.
Can I get international adventure travel insurance?
Yes. Rise & Shield is designed for international adventure travel and offers both Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip options.
Your actual cover still depends on the geographical limits, destinations, traveller eligibility, activities and policy terms shown by your completed quote and policy documents.
Can I get annual adventure travel insurance?
Yes. Rise & Shield offers Annual Multi-Trip policies as well as Single Trip cover, with optional activity cover available to match your plans.
Maximum trip duration and benefit limits depend on the plan you select, so check those limits if you expect to take longer adventure holidays during the year.
What should I look for in the best travel insurance for adventure sports?
Look beyond the headline claim that a policy covers “adventure sports”. Check whether your exact activities and variations are covered, what add-ons are required, and whether conditions apply around guides, qualifications, safety equipment, routes, altitude, depth or technical difficulty.
You should also compare emergency medical and evacuation benefits, cancellation cover, baggage limits, travel disruption and access to 24/7 emergency assistance.
When should I buy adventure travel insurance?
It is generally sensible to arrange travel insurance once your trip is booked so that any eligible pre-departure cancellation cover can begin.
Before buying, check all the activities you reasonably expect to take part in, including optional excursions, then make sure any required activity add-ons appear in your policy documentation.
