Plus loads more benefits...

  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption: If severe blizzards, airport strikes or motorway pile-ups leave you stranded for more than 12 hours or force you to cancel, we refund reasonable extra transport and accommodation costs to keep your ski holiday on track.
  • Emergency Travel Assistance: 24/7 support for urgent medical needs, evacuation or repatriation, wherever your winter sports adventure takes you.
  • Natural Catastrophe Cover: When avalanches, landslides or officially declared storms close the resort or trigger evacuation, we cover extra travel and temporary accommodation so you stay safe.
  • Adventure Bundle: Additional coverage for other high-risk activities like trekking at altitude.

Why do I need ski travel insurance?

Ski resorts aren’t cheap clinics or kit shops. One accident or lost gear can cost a fortune. Here’s why our ski insurance pays for itself:

  • On-piste medical & mountain rescue: A fractured wrist or twisted knee can rack up £5,000–£10,000 in clinic fees and heli-lift charges. We settle the bills and arrange evacuation through our 24/7 assistance team, minus your policy excess.
  • Equipment, lift-pass & hire-gear cover: Whether you lose a helmet, your skis get stolen or lift-passes vanish, we reimburse repair or replacement at current value so you’re back on the slopes fast.
  • Trip disruption & piste-closure refunds: White-out blizzards, avalanche controls or lift breakdowns can shut the resort. We pay daily allowances for alternative travel or refund unused lessons, ski-packs and passes.

One policy. One emergency hotline. Every skier covered.

Ski insurance FAQs

Do I still need ski insurance if I carry a GHIC/EHIC card?

Yes. The card only gives you access to state-run medical care in the EU; it won’t pay for private mountain clinics, heli-rescue, repatriation flights or your £600 rental skis. A dedicated ski policy closes those expensive gaps.

What extras does Rise & Shield’s Winter Sports Cover add to a standard travel policy?

We dial up the medical limit, activate on-mountain evacuation (including helicopters), reimburse lost or damaged skis/boards, refund unused lift-passes, lessons and ski-packs, and even pay daily allowances if the resort shuts. Regular travel insurance usually stops at general medical bills and baggage.

Is off-piste or back-country skiing covered?

Guided or in-bounds off-piste is covered as long as you follow local rules (and stick with a qualified guide where one’s required).

When should I buy ski insurance?

The moment you pay the trip deposit. Cancellation, airline strike and snow-closure cover kick in as soon as the policy is issued, protecting your money long before the first flakes fall.

How much does ski insurance cost?

Premiums flex with trip length, your age, destination, cover limits and any extras (like gadget cover or no-excess upgrades). A week in the Alps often starts at roughly the price of a mountain-top pizza; North America costs a little more thanks to steeper medical fees. Grab a quick quote online to nail down the number.

Will my policy pay for a helicopter rescue?

It will, provided you or a companion ring our 24/7 Assistance Centre first so we can pre-authorise the lift-out and arrange direct billing with the rescue team. A fixed excess applies.

Am I covered if the pistes close because there’s no snow, or too much?

Yes. If the lift system is officially shut for 12 hours or more due to lack of snow, white-out blizzards or avalanche danger, we either pay allowances to reach an alternative resort or compensate you for lost ski days, passes and prepaid lessons.

Does ski insurance cover snowboarding and cross-country skiing?

Absolutely. Snowboarding, XC skiing, telemark and snow-shoeing are included as standard. More niche thrills live under our Adventure add-ons.

Are my own skis, rented kit and gadgets covered?

The luggage section is extended for Winter Sports gear. We pay to repair or replace owned or hired equipment (minus fair-wear depreciation), stolen lift-passes and even that action-cam you keep dropping in the snow.
