Our offshore sailing insurance keeps you protected every nautical mile.

With our Adventure Plus Add-on, you’re covered for:

Offshore passages up to 60 miles from a safe haven.

Emergency medical care

Helicopter evacuation (with pre-approval)

Repatriation and 24/7 emergency support

What’s included in our offshore sailing insurance?

You're covered for:

  • Worldwide emergency medical expenses: We pick up overseas hospital bills and put our 24/7 assistance team on speed-dial if an injury strikes.
  • Trip cancellation & curtailment: When illness, weather alerts or government advisories force you to scrap the passage (or bail out early), we refund the non-recoverable costs.
  • Baggage & gear loss or damage: From foul-weather jackets to nav electronics, we reimburse or replace kit that’s stolen, lost or damaged in transit.
  • Medical evacuation: We organise and pay for an emergency lift-out once our 24/7 assistance team signs it off.

What's not included in this policy?

Our offshore sailing cover does not extend to:

  • Solo, unlicensed or unguided voyages, or trips without a qualified skipper.
  • Passages beyond 60 nautical miles from a safe haven or into uncharted waters.
  • Professional, commercial or racing events (paid crew work is out).

Rise & Shield is trusted by reputable tour operators and adventure companies

What does our Offshore Sailing insurance cover?

With Rise & Shield’s offshore sailing cover, we safeguard every mile beyond the breakwater. This is insurance built for skippers and crew who add the Adventure Plus add-on and follow our safety rules.

Medical Emergencies and Evacuation

We settle overseas hospital bills and, when a doctor orders it, arrange a helicopter lift-out.

Equipment Loss or Damage

From foul-weather jackets to chartplotters, we reimburse or replace sailing gear that’s lost, stolen or accidentally wrecked in transit.

Trip Cancellation & Curtailment

If illness, adverse weather or official advisories force you to scrap the passage (or bail out early) we refund the non-recoverable costs so you can re-plan without sinking the kitty.

Plus loads more benefits...

  • Travel Delay & Missed Departure Protection: When a Gatwick fog bank, port strike in Piraeus or Atlantic squall leaves you grounded for 12 hours, we refund reasonable extra transport and accommodation so you can still make the passage or head home.
  • Natural Catastrophe Cover: If a hurricane shutters the marina in Road Town or an earthquake triggers a tsunami warning in the Aegean, we cover extra travel and replacement digs until you’re safely underway (or repatriated).
  • Adventure Bundle: Additional coverage for other high-risk activities like travel insurance for scuba diving.

Why do I need offshore sailing insurance?

Offshore sailing isn’t a harbour hop; it’s the blue-water run where storms, gear failures and sudden illness can reroute the whole voyage.

We recommend locking in offshore sailing insurance when:

  • Your passage slips past quick-rescue range. Once you’re 30 – 60 nm off Ushant or punching through the Bay of Biscay, coast-guard lifts and tow-boats aren’t cheap—we arrange the evacuation and pick up the tab (minus the rescue excess) so you can helm, not haggle.
  • Your kit wallet can’t take a knock. Think carbon sails, B&G plotters, hydro-generators. If they’re smashed in a knock-down or vanish during a marina transfer, we sort the repair or replacement.
  • Charters, marina fees or delivery flights are pre-paid. Weather windows slam shut, or the crew’s flights to Antigua get scrubbed; our trip disruption cover refunds those non-refundable costs so Plan B isn’t a budget buster.
  • Medical help is days away. We front overseas hospital bills and organise repatriation if appendicitis strikes mid-Atlantic or a boom jibe fractures a collarbone off Cape Verde.

Hoist cover before you cast off, not after the mayday. We’ll handle the paperwork; you trim the sheets.

Offshore sailing insurance FAQs

Do I really need offshore sailing insurance, or will a standard travel insurance policy do?

Yes. Standard cover stops at coastal waters; offshore sailing (outside coastal waters) only kicks in when you bolt on our Adventure Plus add-on.

How far from land am I covered?

We protect passages that stay within 60 nautical miles of a safe haven. Push past that limit and you’ll need a blue-water specialist policy.

Is helicopter or coast-guard rescue included?

Absolutely. If a doctor says it’s medically necessary and our 24/7 assistance team signs it off first.

Does the policy cover solo sailing, racing or professional deliveries?

No. Cover applies to amateur, non-competitive voyages with a qualified skipper or guide on board. Solo passages, races and paid crew work are outside scope.

What paperwork or qualifications do I need?

Have an offshore-rated vessel, lodge a formal passage plan, wear the right safety gear, and carry any required RYA or local skipper certification, plus the correct driving licence if you’ll helm a motorised tender.

Will my gear (charts, electronics, foul-weather kit) be covered if it’s lost or damaged?

Yes. Our baggage section reimburses you (single-item limits apply) for loss, theft or accidental damage in transit.
