What’s included in our Inca Trail insurance?
You’re covered for:
- Worldwide emergency medical expenses: We foot overseas hospital bills and patch you straight through to our 24/7 assistance team if altitude sickness or a rolled ankle sidelines you on Dead Woman’s Pass.
- Trip cancellation & curtailment: If illness, family emergencies, Peruvian government advisories (or those infamous rail or porter strikes) derail the trek, we refund the non-recoverable costs so you can re-plan without raiding the expedition kitty.
- Evacuation and repatriation: Helicopter rescue from the trailhead or overland stretcher hauls are organised and paid for (pre-approval required), and we get you home, or to higher-care facilities, if the doctor says Machu Picchu must wait.
- Baggage & equipment loss or damage: From down jackets to DSLR cameras, we reimburse or replace trekking gear that’s stolen or lost.
- Trek delay cover: We pick up extra lodging, and transport costs if landslides or weather closures force a reschedule.
What's not included in this policy?
Our Inca Trail cover does not extend to:
- Altitudes above 4,600m or any trekking higher than the Adventure Plus limit.
- Technical mountaineering that needs ropes, ice-axes, or crampons.
- Solo or off-route expeditions that wander outside recognised trails or go completely unguided.
- Helicopter rescues without prior authorisation (and the separate excess unpaid).

What our Inca Trail travel insurance covers

Equipment Loss or Damage
We cover your trekking poles, down jacket, sleeping bag, DSLR or drone if they’re lost, stolen, or accidentally wrecked in transit. Travelling with high-ticket tech? Bolt on our High-Value Items rider for extra gadget peace of mind.

Why do I need travel insurance for the Inca Trail?
Inca trail permits sell out months ahead, the trail tops 4,200m, and a rail strike or bout of altitude nausea can turn your Machu Picchu dream into an expensive reroute. That’s where we step in.
We recommend grabbing a policy when:
- Your rescue options are limited to boots or a bird. The Classic Trail winds through remote cloud forest and steep passes where a heli-lift isn’t cheap; we arrange the evacuation and foot the bill so you can focus on acclimatising, not accounting.
- Your kit wallet can’t take a hit. Think down jackets, carbon poles, or that mirrorless camera you swore was “essential.” If it’s lost in transit or sacrificed to Andean mud, we sort the repair or replacement.
- Permits, trains, or lodges are pre-paid. A sudden landslide, porter strike, or PeruRail cancellation can nuke a carefully chained itinerary; our trip disruption cover refunds those non-refundable costs, so Plan B doesn’t torch the budget.
- Medical help is hours (and a few stone steps) away. We front overseas hospital expenses and organise repatriation if altitude sickness, fractures, or a dodgy ceviche end the trek early.
Lock in cover before you lace the boots, not after the mishap. We’ll handle the paperwork; you handle the Sun Gate selfies.
Why choose our Inca Trail travel insurance?
Opting for Rise & Shield means picking cover engineered for Andean altitude and Machu Picchu logistics. Here’s why we stand out:
- 24/7 Altitude-Savvy Support: Our assistance doctors spot AMS before it wrecks the summit selfie and liaise directly with Peruvian rescue crews. Help is literally on call, night or day.
- Streamlined, Trek-Specific Claims: Missed the Cusco train, duffel vanished at Lima? Our claims team has seen it all and pays out fast, no Inti-sized paperwork.
- Specialist Evacuation Network: We pre-arrange heli partners and overland stretchers from the Sacred Valley, so a lift-out never relies on frantic last-minute calls.
- Transparent Pricing, No Altitude Surcharge (≤ 4,500m): You won’t get stung for topping Dead Woman’s Pass; the premium is locked in at quote time.
- Customisable Add-Ons: Bolt on High-Value Items cover for mirrorless cameras or satellite comms, or extend trek dates if strike delays nudge the itinerary.
With Rise & Shield’s Inca Trail insurance, we keep the risk management grounded so you can keep your eyes on the horizon and the Sun Gate.

Inca Trail travel insurance FAQs
Absolutely. Fitness won’t stop an unlucky ankle twist, rogue stomach bug, or sudden trail closure. Our policy picks up the medical bills, evacuation costs and trip-disruption expenses so an unexpected hiccup doesn’t torch the Machu Picchu fund.
The core policy handles everyday travel woes; Adventure Plus dials the protection up for high-altitude trekking. Think helicopter extraction, specialist altitude care and cover for guided routes like the Classic, Salkantay or Lares trails. If your boots are headed above the cloud forest, we recommend bolting it on.
Yes. We built the wording with the Inca Trail’s elevation profile in mind. If acute mountain sickness (or anything nastier) strikes, we fund treatment and, if needed, organise a lift to safer ground or back home.
Our trip disruption cover refunds non-recoverable costs (permits, guides, pre-paid lodging, trains) plus reasonable extra transport or accommodation so you can re-plan without emptying the wallet.
Standard baggage cover looks after the usual kit. Travelling with pricier gear? Add our High-Value Items rider and we’ll repair or replace the gadget if it’s stolen, lost or accidentally sacrificed to Andean mud.
We run a 24/7 assistance line that accepts voice, SMS and data calls whenever you find a bar of reception. Can’t connect? Any guide or lodge can radio our local partners, who’ll loop us in, arrange care and start the claim for you. Less paperwork, more peace of mind.
