Who is this cover for?

If you're already travelling and forgot to buy insurance, or your original policy ran out and you're extending your trip, this cover is for you.

Our Already Abroad option ensures you can still access emergency medical protection, even if your journey is already underway.

You must meet a few simple conditions:

  • You haven’t already experienced an incident you want to claim for.
  • You’re in good health and not currently receiving medical treatment.
  • You’re travelling on a single-trip basis (this add-on doesn’t apply to annual multi-trip policies).

What am I covered for?

You’ll get the same strong emergency medical coverage that comes with our standard single-trip policies, including:

  • Hospital stays and medical treatment for illness or injury
  • Emergency dental care to relieve pain
  • Medical evacuation or repatriation, if needed

Note: This cover does not apply to routine check-ups, pre-existing conditions, or anything that happened before your policy started.

Why is there a 48-hour waiting period?

If you’re taking out travel insurance after your trip has already started, there’s one important rule to know: for the first 48 hours, your cover is limited to accidents only.

That means if you slip on a trail or injure yourself while out exploring, you're still protected, but the incident must be independently verified (for example, confirmed by a medical report or witness statement).

During this window, you won’t be covered for illnesses or medical issues that begin in that time.

Once those initial 48 hours have passed, your full emergency medical cover kicks in.

It’s a small buffer to protect the system from claims on issues that might have already been brewing before you hit “buy.”

More importantly, it helps us keep premiums affordable and fair for all travellers, without cutting corners on quality protection.

Why choose Already Abroad cover?

Sometimes travel plans shift and your insurance needs to shift with them.

Our Already Abroad policy is designed to give you essential protection, even after you’ve left home.

  • Covers you for emergency medical treatment and hospital stays
  • Designed for travellers who are already on their trip
  • Quick and easy to activate with minimal hassle

It’s smart, flexible cover that helps you keep moving forward safely and confidently.

Travel insurance already abroad FAQs

Can I buy travel insurance if I’m already abroad?

Yes! Rise & Shield offers travel insurance for travellers who are already overseas. Our policies provide quick, reliable coverage no matter where you are.

Can I claim if something happened just before I bought the policy?

No. This policy only covers unexpected events that happen after you’ve purchased it. Claims for incidents that occurred before your cover started will be declined.

What counts as an “accident” during the 48-hour waiting period?

An accident must be sudden, unexpected, and caused by an external event (like slipping and breaking a wrist).

You’ll need evidence from an independent witness or medical provider to support your claim.

Is there an extra cost?

Yes, there’s an additional premium to activate Already Abroad cover.

It’s a small price for big peace of mind and it ensures you’re protected without needing to cut your trip short or hope for the best.

This upgrade is non-refundable and must be added when purchasing your policy.

How do I file a claim?

Filing a claim is easy. Simply contact our 24/7 customer support team, provide the necessary documentation, and we’ll guide you through the process.

Does this policy cover adventure activities?

Yes! We offer optional coverage for adventure activities like hiking, diving, or skiing, so you can enjoy your travels with confidence.

Can I extend my trip again after buying this?

You can’t extend the policy itself, but you can take out a new policy if your situation changes. Just be sure you’re still eligible under the “Already Abroad” criteria at the time.
