Kilimanjaro Travel Insurance

Conquer Kilimanjaro with confidence using Kilimanjaro travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and more. Quick & easy.

Reach the Roof of Africa, Uhuru Peak (5,895m), with complete confidence.

At Rise & Shield, we’ve designed our Kilimanjaro travel insurance for trekkers who want to chase that crater-rim sunrise without fretting over the financial fallout of altitude drama.

With our Adventure Extreme Add-on, you’re covered for:

  • Trekking and hiking up to 6,500m altitude.
  • High-altitude guided expeditions (Machame, Lemosho, Rongai) and beyond.
  • Emergency medical cover (including AMS, HAPE & HACE).
  • Helicopter or stretcher evacuation from the mountain (with pre-approval and excess paid).
  •  Repatriation home and 24/7 emergency support from altitude-savvy doctors.

Let the summit push test your legs. Our insurance handles the rest.

What’s included in our Kilimanjaro insurance?

You’re covered for:

  • Worldwide emergency medical expenses: We pick up overseas hospital bills and put our 24/7 assistance team on speed-dial if a bout of AMS, HAPE or just a sketchy ankle on the Barranco Wall takes you out of the game.
  • Trip cancellation & curtailment: Illness, family emergencies or sudden Tanzanian park closures forcing you to scrap the climb? We refund the non-recoverable costs of permits, guides and porters, so your expedition kitty lives to fight another summit.
  • Evacuation and repatriation: Helicopter lift-outs from Shira Plateau or stretcher hauls down the summit scree are organised and paid for (pre-approval required), with onward transport home or to higher-care facilities if a doctor says you can’t continue.
  • Baggage & equipment loss or damage: From down jackets to DSLR cameras, we reimburse or replace trekking kit that’s stolen in Moshi, soaked on the Lemosho trail or accidentally trashed in transit.
  • Natural catastrophe cover: Should volcanic ash, flash floods or sudden route closures derail your climb, we chip in for extra accommodation and alternative travel.
  • Missed departure & connection: Delayed flights into Kilimanjaro International (JRO) or Nairobi? We cover additional transport and accommodation to get you back on schedule for your summit push.

What’s not included in this policy?

Our Kilimanjaro cover does not extend to:

  • Altitudes above 6,500m or any trekking higher than the Adventure Extreme limit. Uhuru Peak tops out at 5,895m, so you’re golden. Anything loftier is out.
  • Solo or off-route expeditions that wander away from recognised trails or go unguided. Kili is still a national park with strict ranger regs.

Keep those limits in mind, and our policy will handle everything the mountain, or Tanzanian logistics, throws at you.

Rise & Shield is trusted by reputable tour operators and adventure companies

What does our Kilimanjaro insurance cover?

With Rise & Shield’s Kilimanjaro cover, we safeguard every muddy stride through rainforest and every lung-searing haul up the Alpine desert, right to that sunrise selfie on Uhuru Peak. Built for high-altitude trekkers tackling Machame, Lemosho, Marangu or Rongai, our policy keeps the adventure humming even when the mountain throws a tantrum.

Medical Emergencies and Evacuation

We settle overseas hospital bills and, when a doctor orders it, organise helicopter lift-outs from Shira Plateau or stretcher hauls down the summit scree.

Equipment Loss or Damage

Trekking poles, down jacket, sleeping bag, DSLR or drone? If it’s lost, stolen or wrecked or in Moshi transit, we pay to repair or replace it. Travelling with pricey tech? Bolt on our High-Value Items rider for extra gadget peace of mind.

Travel Inconvenience Benefit

Late flights into Kilimanjaro International, landslide-blocked roads to the gate, strike-hit shuttle buses? When logistics implode, we refund reasonable extra transport and accommodation so your summit bid stays on track.

Plus loads more benefits...

  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption: When strikes at JRO, Nairobi-connection chaos or an Arusha-traffic meltdown make you miss your flight, or strand you on the tarmac for 12 hours, we refund reasonable extra transport and accommodation to sling you back on schedule.
  • Emergency Travel Assistance: Our altitude-savvy support line is on call wherever you are on the mountain, from a rain-soaked Mandara Hut to the wind-blasted Kibo saddle.
  • Natural Catastrophe Cover: If a mudslide washes out the Machame trail, rockfall blocks the Barranco traverse or TANAPA orders an evacuation for volcanic rumblings, we pick up the tab for extra transport and replacement digs (or get you safely home).
  • Emergency Dental Cover: Crack a molar on a frozen Snickers at 5,600m or grind a filling loose while night-climbing to Stella Point? We pay for urgent dental treatment abroad so you can keep chomping celebratory summit pizza pain-free.
  • Baggage Coverage: Protection for your personal kit against loss or damage, whether your down jacket disappears in Moshi or your trekking poles get mis-routed to Zanzibar.

Why do I need Kilimanjaro travel insurance?

Kilimanjaro cover isn’t for Sunday strollers. It’s for the high-altitude slog where sudden storms, strike-hit shuttle buses and acute mountain sickness can flip your expedition on its head.

We recommend locking in a policy when:

  • Your trail climbs above easy-rescue altitude. Remote slopes and scree fields mean heli lift-outs or stretcher hauls aren’t cheap; we arrange the evacuation and foot the bill so you can focus on acclimating, not accounting.
  • Your kit wallet can’t take a hit. Think down jackets, trekking poles or that DSLR you’re packing for Uhuru Peak sunrise. If it’s lost or damaged in Moshi, we’ll sort the repair or replacement.
  • Permits, flights and park fees are pre-paid. Delayed connections into JRO, bus strikes on the Arusha-Moshi road or hut closures can nuke a carefully chained itinerary; our trip-disruption cover refunds those non-refundable costs so Plan B isn’t a budget buster.
  • Medical help is hours (and switchbacks) away. We front overseas hospital expenses and organise repatriation if altitude sickness, fractures or frost-nipped toes send you down early.

Grab cover before you lace up the boots, not after the mishap. We’ll handle the paperwork; you handle the summit selfie.

Why choose our Kilimanjaro insurance?

Opting for Rise & Shield means picking cover engineered for Tanzanian altitude and Kilimanjaro logistics. Here’s why we stand out:

  • 24/7 Altitude-Savvy Support: Our assistance doctors know AMS from HAPE and speak directly with Kilimanjaro SAR crews and park rangers. Help is literally on call, night or day, whether you’re at Horombo Hut or grinding up Stella Point.
  • Streamlined, Trek-Specific Claims: Mis-routed duffels in Moshi, delayed flights into JRO, porters’ strike on the Marangu Route? Our claims team has seen it all and pays out fast, no Kili-sized paperwork pile.
  • Specialist Evacuation Network: We pre-arrange heli partners in Moshi and stretcher teams on standby, so a lift-out never hinges on frantic last-minute calls (or empty wallets).
  • Transparent Pricing, No Altitude Surcharge (≤ 6,500 m): You won’t get stung for climbing to Uhuru Peak; the premium is locked in at quote time.
  • Customisable Add-Ons: Bolt on High-Value Items cover for mirrorless cameras or satellite comms, or extend trip dates if your acclimatisation schedule shifts.

With Rise & Shield’s Kilimanjaro travel insurance, we keep the risk management grounded so you can keep your eyes on that rosy crater-rim sunrise.

  • Worldwide (excluding North America)
The key is: pick the region that covers every country you’ll set foot in on the way to and from your Kilimanjaro trek.

When are you going?

Select your start date as the day you leave home, not just the day your trek starts.

Select your end date as the day you arrive back home.

  • Enter each traveller’s date of birth when prompted.

3. Choose your base cover (Essentials / Plus / Elite)

On the Cover step you’ll see three options:

  • Essentials
  • Plus
  • Elite

Your ability to trek Kilimanjaro at altitude depends on the Adventure Extreme add-on, not which of these three you pick.

However, because high-altitude treks are remote and can be pricey, many trekkers go for Plus or Elite to get higher limits for:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation
  • Trip cancellation/curtailment

Click the card for Essentials, Plus or Elite (whichever suits your budget and risk appetite).

Hit Next.

4. Add high-altitude trekking cover (Adventure Extreme add-on)

This is the crucial step for Kili-type treks.

On the Extras page you’ll see several tiles:

  • Adventure: automatically included for a wide range of standard activities.
  • Adventure Plus: for mid-level adventure (e.g. lower-altitude trekking, certain dives, etc.).
  • Adventure Extreme: for high-altitude treks such as Kilimanjaro, Everest Base Camp and similar expeditions.
  • Winter Sports, High Value Items, etc.

For high-altitude trekking like Kili you must:

  1. Find the Adventure Extreme tile.
  2. Click ADD on that tile.
  3. Check the policy summary box on the right:

The price updates.

Adventure Extreme appears under your cover/extras.

Remember: If Adventure Extreme is not listed, your high-altitude trek is not correctly covered, even if you’ve chosen a base policy.

Leave other extras (Winter Sports, High Value Items, etc.) off unless you specifically need them.

Click Next once Adventure Extreme is clearly shown in your summary.

  3. When you’re ready, click Confirm Purchase to complete the policy.

That’s the moment the policy is actually bought, so double-check:

  • Dates are correct from leaving home to returning home.
  • The destination region matches your full route.
  • Adventure Extreme is still listed in your policy summary.

7. After you’ve bought the policy

Check your email for:

  • Policy schedule (shows your dates, regions, add-ons like Adventure Extreme, and benefit limits).
  • Full policy wording.

And then...

  1. Save a copy to your phone/tablet and/or print a copy to keep with your travel documents.
  2. Make a note of the emergency assistance number so you have it handy on the trek.

Kilimanjaro insurance FAQs

Do I really need specialist insurance for a Mount Kilimanjaro trek?

Yes. Ordinary holiday cover stops short of high-altitude trekking. Our Kilimanjaro policy is purpose-built for climbs up to 6 ,500 m, includes altitude-related medical emergencies and pays for mountain evacuations that standard insurers class as “hazardous”.

Does the policy cover me all the way to Uhuru Peak?

Absolutely. Every recognised route (Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, Rongai, Northern Circuit and even day-guided Western Breach attempts) is covered up to the summit’s 5 ,895 m. Just stay on an official route with a licensed guide and you’re within our altitude limit.

Is helicopter evacuation really available on Kilimanjaro?

It is now. We partner with local heli providers; if a doctor orders a lift-out from Shira Plateau or Barafu, we organise and fund it (pre-approval required). Where rotors can’t reach, we pay for park-ranger stretcher teams and ambulance transfer to Moshi.

What happens if altitude sickness forces me to abandon the summit push?

If Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) or a guide’s safety call ends your climb early, our trip-curtailment benefit refunds the unused portion of park fees, hut bookings and guiding cost, so you can reroute funds to a future attempt instead of watching them evaporate.

When should I buy Kilimanjaro travel insurance?

Lock it in as soon as you pay the deposit for your trek. Buying early activates cancellation cover for flights, park permits and guiding fees. Last-minute shopper? We’ll still insure you up to the day before departure, but pre-trip benefits only kick in after purchase.

Does the policy cover delays getting to the mountain?

It does. Flight disruptions into Kilimanjaro International (JRO), strike-hit shuttle buses or weather-closed border roads trigger our missed departure and travel delay benefits, reimbursing extra accommodation and transport so your itinerary stays intact.
