Travel Insurance Basics

Whether you're a seasoned traveller or planning your first trip, understanding travel insurance can feel overwhelming. We're here to answer the basics and help you choose the right coverage for your adventure.

What is travel insurance, and why do I need it?

Travel insurance is your safety net while exploring the world.

It protects you financially from unexpected events like trip cancellations, medical emergencies, lost baggage, and more.

Without it, a simple mishap could lead to significant costs, especially abroad, where expenses can quickly add up. Think of it as peace of mind for your travels.

What does a typical travel insurance policy cover?

A standard travel insurance policy usually includes:

  • Medical expenses for injuries or illnesses abroad.
  • Trip cancellations or interruptions.
  • Lost, stolen, or damaged baggage and personal belongings.
  • Travel delays or missed departures.
  • Emergency medical evacuation or repatriation.

Specific coverage may vary, so always check the details of your policy.

What’s not covered by travel insurance?

While travel insurance covers many situations, there are common exclusions, such as:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions (unless declared and approved).
  • Reckless or illegal activities.
  • Participation in high-risk sports or adventures without proper coverage.
  • Travel to regions under government advisories.
  • Expenses due to neglecting to follow policy requirements (e.g., not filing a police report for stolen items).

Always review your policy to understand what’s excluded.

Can I buy travel insurance after I’ve already started my trip?

Yes, many providers, including Rise & Shield, offer travel insurance for those who are already abroad.

However, there may be limitations on coverage, so it’s best to get insured before departure to maximise your benefits.

How do I choose the right policy for my trip?

Choosing the right policy depends on your needs. Consider these factors:

  • Destination: Ensure your policy covers the countries you’re visiting.
  • Activities: If you’re planning adventure sports or activities, make sure they’re included.
  • Duration: Check whether the policy covers the entire length of your trip.
  • Medical Coverage: Opt for policies with sufficient coverage for healthcare expenses abroad.
  • Value for Money: Compare premiums and benefits to find the best fit.

At Rise & Shield, we have an intelligent quote system that’ll walk you through the process. By answering a few simple questions, you can quickly get matched with the perfect policy.

If you're still unsure, our team at Rise & Shield is happy to help you find the perfect plan.

Policy Details

Understanding the finer details of your travel insurance policy can help you make the most of your coverage. Let’s break it down for you.

What’s the difference between single-trip and annual multi-trip insurance?

  • Single-Trip Insurance: This covers you for one trip, starting and ending on specific dates. It’s ideal for occasional travellers or one-off adventures.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Insurance: This provides coverage for multiple trips throughout the year, with each trip covered up to a maximum duration (e.g., 31 or 45 days per trip). It’s perfect for frequent travellers looking for convenience and cost savings.

Choose the option that best suits your travel habits and needs.

Does my policy cover pre-existing medical conditions?

Pre-existing conditions are typically not covered unless declared and approved by the insurer.

When applying for your policy, you’ll need to provide details of any medical conditions.

Depending on the condition and its stability, additional coverage may be available for an extra premium. Be upfront during the application process to avoid denied claims later.

What does “excess” mean, and how does it apply to my claims?

An “excess” is the amount you agree to pay out of pocket before your insurer covers the rest of the claim.

For example, if your claim is for £500 and your excess is £100, you’ll receive £400 from your insurer.

Policies with higher excess amounts often have lower premiums, but it’s important to choose an amount you’re comfortable with.

Can I upgrade my policy to include additional coverage?

Yes! If your travel plans change or you decide to include specific adventure activities or add-ons (e.g., winter sports, high-value items, or adventure coverage), you can upgrade your policy.

Upgrades must usually be made before your trip begins, so review your plans early and contact our team to adjust your policy accordingly.

Making a Claim

We understand that filing a claim might feel overwhelming, but with Rise & Shield, it’s straightforward and hassle-free. Here’s what you need to know.
