Why do I need trekking insurance?
Ordinary holiday insurance may exclude remote trekking routes, high-altitude activity or treks that require specialist equipment and support.
Specialist trekking insurance can help protect you against eligible medical emergencies, approved evacuation and unexpected disruption before or during your trip.
What altitude cover do I need?
Check the highest point on your complete route, including mountain passes, viewpoints and optional summit sections. The correct cover level is based on the highest altitude reached—not where you sleep.
Rise & Shield includes eligible trekking up to 3,000m as standard. Adventure Plus extends eligible trekking cover up to 4,600m, while Adventure Extreme provides eligible trekking cover up to 6,500m.
Important: Select the cover level shown by the trek checker and confirm that any required add-on appears in your policy summary before buying.
Does trekking insurance cover altitude sickness?
Eligible emergency medical treatment for altitude illness may be covered when the correct trekking cover level is included.
Cover remains subject to the policy terms, benefit limits, exclusions and applicable medical conditions provisions.
Is helicopter rescue covered?
An eligible helicopter evacuation may be covered when it is medically necessary and approved by the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Centre.
A separate helicopter evacuation excess applies. Contact the assistance team before arranging an evacuation whenever possible.
What if my trek is cancelled or delayed?
Cover may help with eligible, unrecoverable costs following an insured cancellation, curtailment, travel delay or missed departure.
Benefit limits, waiting periods, insured-event requirements and other policy conditions apply.
Do I need a guide for my trek?
Guide requirements depend on the route and activity involved. Where required, you must use a professional, qualified guide or operator and follow their safety instructions.
Unsupported, exploratory or off-route expeditions are not covered where they fall outside the policy’s activity conditions.
What is the difference between trekking and mountaineering?
Trekking generally follows established routes without technical climbing. Mountaineering may involve ropes, ice axes, crampons, climbing grades or specialist techniques.
These activities can require different cover classifications and conditions. Use the trek checker or contact us if your itinerary includes a summit, glacier crossing or technical section.

Hiking insurance FAQs
What is trekking insurance?
Trekking insurance is travel insurance that can cover eligible hiking and trekking activities alongside benefits for emergency medical treatment, approved evacuation, cancellation, baggage and travel disruption.
The activities, altitude and benefit limits covered depend on your policy and any add-ons you select.
Does ordinary travel insurance cover hiking and trekking?
Not always. Some policies exclude trekking entirely or apply a relatively low altitude limit. Rise & Shield includes eligible hiking and trekking up to 3,000m as standard, with optional cover available for higher-altitude routes.
What altitude does Rise & Shield trekking insurance cover?
Rise & Shield includes eligible trekking up to 3,000m as standard. Adventure Plus extends eligible trekking cover up to 4,600m, while Adventure Extreme extends it up to 6,500m. The route and activity must also meet the applicable policy conditions.
Which trekking add-on do I need?
Choose your cover based on the highest point reached anywhere on your itinerary, including passes, viewpoints and optional summit sections.
You need Adventure Plus for eligible trekking above 3,000m and up to 4,600m, or Adventure Extreme for eligible trekking above 4,600m and up to 6,500m.
How can I check whether my exact trek is covered?
Use the trek checker on this page and search for your trek, mountain or route. It will show the available cover level and any important conditions to check.
If your route is not listed, contact Rise & Shield with your itinerary, maximum altitude and planned activities.
Does trekking insurance cover altitude sickness?
Eligible emergency medical treatment for altitude illness may be covered when you have selected the correct trekking cover level. Cover remains subject to the policy’s medical provisions, benefit limits and exclusions.
Is helicopter rescue covered while trekking?
An eligible helicopter evacuation may be covered when it is medically necessary and approved in advance by the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Centre.
A separate helicopter evacuation excess applies. Do not arrange a helicopter independently before contacting the assistance team unless circumstances make prior contact impossible.
Do I need a guide for my trek?
Eligible trekking up to 3,000m must remain on recognised routes or trails but does not universally require a guide.
Trekking up to 4,600m or 6,500m must be undertaken on a recognised route with a professional, qualified and licensed guide, instructor or operator.
What is the difference between hiking, trekking and mountaineering?
Hiking and trekking generally follow established routes without technical climbing equipment.
An activity involving ropes, picks, crampons or other specialist climbing equipment may be treated as mountaineering and require a different activity classification, add-on and set of conditions.
Can popular treks such as Everest Base Camp and Kilimanjaro be covered?
Eligible routes such as Everest Base Camp, Kilimanjaro, the Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek, Annapurna Sanctuary and Mount Toubkal may be covered with the appropriate altitude level or add-on.
Cover depends on the exact route, maximum altitude, guide arrangements and planned activities.
Is my trekking equipment covered?
Eligible loss, theft or accidental damage affecting your baggage and personal trekking equipment may be covered. Total benefit limits, individual-item limits, security conditions and an applicable excess may apply.
Can one policy cover my trek and the rest of my holiday?
Yes, provided your policy dates cover your complete journey, your chosen destination region includes every country visited and all planned activities fall within the policy or selected add-ons.
Eligible cancellation, curtailment, baggage and travel-delay benefits remain subject to their individual insured events, limits and conditions.
